How Emilie Choi Running Coinbase?

Later City News: For the first time, Fortune.com gave Emilie Choi ranked 15 in the list 40 under 40 in 2018. Fortune introduced her as the M&A veteran who oversaw more than 40 acquisitions during her tenure at LinkedIn, and now Choi is helping guide Coinbase's expansion plans.


The company's chief operating officer, Asiff Hirji, says she will be presiding over everything from "acqui-hires" to "middle and large-scale acquisitions."


Choi has wasted no time in her new gig: Coinbase has already bought several startups this year, including Paradex, a decentralized exchange provider, and Keystone Capital, a financial firm that comes with a broker-dealer license.


Since 2018, she is President and Chief Operating Officer at Coinbase. Before Coinbase, she spent nine years (2009-2018) as Vice President and Head of Corporate Development at Linkedin.


Coinbase was founded in June of 2012. The company is a digital currency wallet and platform where merchants and consumers can transact with new digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin.

Currently, she is on the Board of Directors at Prosus NV, ZipRecruiter, Inc., and Naspers Ltd.


Choi was previously employed as a Vice President-Corporate Development by LinkedIn Corp., a Head-Corporate Development & Strategy by Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc., and a Head-Corporate Development & Strategy by Yahoo!, Inc.


Emilie Choi is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Class of 2000, where she majored in Economics. She obtained her MBA in Strategic Management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

At Wharton, Choi was the John A. Mayer Fellowship recipient, a merit scholarship based on academic and professional performance. She was a teaching assistant for a core Wharton management course and the VP of Career Development for the Media and Entertainment Club.


Choi studied abroad, taking a course in general course in economics from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).


Currently, Coinbase, under Choi's supervision, has more than 56 million users across more than 100 countries and held some $223bn in users' assets.


It reported $1.8bn in estimated revenue in the first three months of 2021 - more than its total for all of 2020 - as interest in Bitcoin and other digital currencies boomed.


Compared to 2018, when Choi started leading Coinbase, it was worth $8bn in a private funding round, the firm's value has increased more than ten-fold.


BBC reported on Wednesday's March 14th, Coinbase, as a cryptocurrency company, was listed in the stock market for the first time in history. Coinbase listing was set to make Coinbase co-founder and chief executive Brian Armstrong one of the world's wealthiest people. The 38-year-old, a former Airbnb software engineer, owns a roughly 21% stake in the company.
