Adrenaline junkies play a part in game programming by 2030.

Later City News: Adrenaline junkies can expect to see VR and augmented reality play a part in game programming in 2030.

Players can trial and ride exciting new roller-coasters via augmented reality simulators that will take up a fraction of the space, and cost, of the real-life equivalent.

Ten years from now, you may be still setting aside money for the latest PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo system. "It’s likely that consoles will still be around, with more of a niche presence (like gaming PCs) for the hardcore who wants the fastest and most graphically pure experience," said Michael Pachter, an analyst for Wedbush Securities.

However, he sees each generation of video game consoles likely selling fewer units, with each likely only one-half to three-fourths as large as the previous generation. At the same time, the global addressable market for games will increase tenfold and game sales will double by 2030, Pachter estimates.

In 2019, the gaming industry generated $120 billion in revenue, and experts predict it could reach $200 billion within two years; 100 million viewers tuned in to watch players compete in the World Championship of the game League of Legends — a larger haul than the telecast of the Super Bowl; and, by 2021, it’s projected that 2.7 billion people — about one-third of the global population — will be gamers.

The global browser games market is expected to grow from $26.26 billion in 2021 stabilize at a compound annual growth rate of 4.7% and reach $28.18 billion by 2023.

Michael Pachter believes games streamed from the cloud, as opposed to those sold on a physical disc or downloaded to a console, will see gains in acceptance. "Late adopters are far more likely to adopt streaming earlier in the cycle and to forego the purchase of a console altogether," Pachter said.

According to the state of online gaming report in 2019, gamers play for an average of seven hours seven minutes per week, a 19.3% increase in 2018. Younger players, however, spend much more time playing, with those aged 26-35 play 8 hours 12 minutes per week. Germany and the United States were linked to the highest number of gamers who play at 11.6% per week for more than 20 hours. Therefore, the rapid increase in the number of active gamers across the world is expected to drive the browser games market.

Phil Harrison, the Vice President, and GM, Google believes the gaming industry will continue to grow even in 2030, led by the experiences that you get on mobile and PC and consoles, as they start to merge. This will mainly be powered by a few shifts in our industry.

He added there is an obvious direction of travel for GPUs in 2030. As gate density on a chip gets better we'll be able to process more and more. For example, we're starting to see the early hints of ray tracing, and we'll see much more complex 3D graphics and pixel processing techniques get embedded in hardware and that will continue to drive visual reality. And when you combine the ability to render pixels realistically with procedural generation, games will outperform movies in terms of visual performance.
